Middle School Bulletin Boards

I went back to teaching this year after three years home with my children.  I spent the first 12 years teaching as an elementary school teacher in the public schools and now I teach middle school science at a Christian school.  I don't have to tell you that there are a lot of differences between the two!

One of the differences is the bulletin boards.  If you are a teacher you know what I am talking about.  In the elementary school, bulletin boards are sacred.  The teachers spend hours designing and making the most beautiful creations.  It is in their blood.  In the middle school and especially the high school, bulletin boards can be an after thought.

I was excited that my colleagues in my middle school were open to some creative bulletin boards.  We spiced it up in the middle school building this year.   One of my colleagues created an amazing display for Christmas on the names of Jesus.

Here are the bulletin boards that we have created recently:

I got the idea for this from Pinterest and then adapted it for us.  The teacher next door to me drew the Bible and chose the verse- Isaiah 34:16.

One of the student teachers in our building designed this winter themed board.

She used cups and paper towels.

It was fully three dimensional!

This simple board outside my room displayed some goals and resolutions for the new year that kids in my study wrote.  There is paw print border because our mascot is the TIGER.

Happy 69th Anniversary!

Happy 69th wedding anniversary to George and Barbara Bush!  Wow!  That is a long time!  They were married on January 6, 1945.  Barbara Bush says that she married the first man she ever kissed.

They hold the record for the longest presidential marriage by a long shot!  Second place goes to John and Abigail Adams who were married for 54 years.

In order for Aaron and I to be married for 69 years, I will need to live to be 102 years old and Aaron 103!

Downton Abbey Season 4 Episode 1 My Favorite Quote

Yes, I have jumped on the Downton Abbey bandwagon.  I watched tonight's episode and this was my favorite quote, advice given from a grandmother to her grand-daughter about motherhood.

Snow Schedule With Three Kids

Here in the Northeast USA, we had a blizzard this weekend.  One of those winter days where schools are closed and a state of emergency is declared by the Governor.   Yesterday was a perfect day for heading outside to play in the snow in the backyard.  That is easier said than done when you have three small children!

So what does it look like getting three kids outside to play in the snow?

9:00- Kids wake up and my husband makes the mistake of telling them they will be going outside to play in the snow today
9:00-12:00- Kids repeatedly ask if it is time to go outside
12:00- lunch, kids occasionally take a breath in between bites of food to ask if it is time to go outside.
12:30- start putting on snowsuits
12:45- get snowsuits on and then Lucas says he has too go to the bathroom
1:00- get snowsuit back on
1:05- Kids have to pose for pictures for Mommy in their snowsuits
1:10- Kids finally head outside
1:15- Kids start complaining that it is cold
1:20- Everyone heads inside and snowsuits come off again

Book Review: So Long, Insecurity- Teen Edition

Title: So Long, Insecurity- Teen Edition
Author: Beth Moore
Genre: Teenager, Christian Living

I chose to review this book for two reasons.  First, I completed the adult version of this Bible study with my ladies group at church and I was interested to see how it would be adapted for teenagers.  Secondly,  I have a 16 year old niece and I thought she would enjoy reading this book and benefit from it.  I was excited to hear her opinion of the book.

This book is written in a magazine style approach.  This was very appealing to my niece.  It wasn't written in the typical narrative form like the adult version of So Long, Insecurity.  Each article contains colorful pictures, surveys, scriptures with biographies of Bible characters and quizzes.

The book covers many topics that teenagers today are facing.  They are topics that they may be afraid to come to their parents to ask questions.  Boys, fashion, the media, gifts, skills and self-esteem are discussed.  I recommend that the adult read a copy of the book as well so that both mother and daughter can have a conversation about topics that are relevant to teenagers.

My niece enjoyed the book and felt that it wasn't "boring" or "uncool." That is a rave review coming from a sixteen year old girl.  She did say that it is not a thorough Bible study and not very "deep."  It should be read like a magazine and that every teenager needs to be in the word for themselves.

In my opinion, one negative aspect of this book was the photographs.  The spends a lot of time discussing self esteem and as women how we should not compare ourselves to the girls that are in teh media.  They are often air brushed and made to look "perfect."  Real girls look "real."  Unfortunately, the girls pictured in Beth Moore's book are no different than the airbrushed, "perfect" girls pictured in secular media.  There is not a pimple to be found in the book.   She also talks about modesty yet the girls in her book are showing cleavage and wearing short shorts/skirts. It was hypocritical of her to include those photographs in her book.

I would give this book three out of five stars.  I would not recommend it to very conservative Christian families because of the photographs.

Book Review: Sent

Title: Sent
Subtitle: How One Ordinary Family Traded the American Dream for God's Greater Purpose
Author: Hilary Alan
Genre: Christian Living

Sent is a memoir written by Hilary Alan and her call to the mission field.  This is the description of the book from Amazon:

Two words from Jesus change everything

If anyone had the ability to succeed as a committed Christian as well as a high-achieving American, it was Hilary Alan. She and her husband, Curt, had a beautiful home, a fast-track career, and talented, successful children. But in the midst of their comfortable life and active church involvement, they realized they rarely heard from God.

Sent tells the story of ordinary Christians who accepted two words from Jesus at face value and found that doing so changed everything. In Jesus’s call to “follow me,” the Alans discovered answers to the most pressing human needs: meaning, purpose, vocation, significance, and God’s plan for the future. For the Alans, it led to selling nearly all their belongings and moving with their children halfway around the world. For you, the particulars will be completely different, but no less significant. Jesus’s call can change everything in your life.

As you follow Hilary Alan’s journey in response to Jesus’s call to discipleship, you will gain a clear understanding of the things that can keep you from obeying God. You will no longer wonder if you’re investing your life in the best way possible, because two words from Jesus change everything.

When I chose to review this book I was excited to read it.  I wanted to read about their experience and their service to the Lord.   I have to be honest.  I was not able to thoroughly read the entire book.  I was discouraged by the lack of editing.  The writing jumped around and the chapters didn't seem to flow together.    This review is based on my skimming of the book.

It was inspiring to hear about the call to missions that the famly received.  After that Hilary Alan became redundant and had trouble getting to the "meat" of her message.   It would have been better to hear more about the difference that the family made when they arrived overseas.  There was not enough written about what the entire family did when they spent there time in SE Asia.

One of my concerns that prevented me from thoroughly reading the book was the author's negative tone towards the people she was ministering to.  It was subtle but done in the form of comparisons like calling SE Asia "dirty" and the west "clean."  She just further perpetuated sterotypes that we as Christians should be tearing down.  She wrote with an air of superiority.

I admire the sacrifices her family made to serve the Lord.   I am thankful for missionaries that give up so much to help others and serve the Lord in distant areas of our world.  I think that her story is amazing but would have been better shared by an author telling the entire family's story rather than this being written as a memoir by Hilary Alan.

I really dislike writing negative reviews but I must say that I would not recommend this book.  I don't think that unbelievers will hear and understand the message of salvation through this book, rather they may be offended.  The plan of salvation is presented in the last chapter but would be better if it was presented in the body of the story itself.

I would recommend this book to Evangelical Christians considering the mission field.  It might be a perspective that may help them in their decision to go into missions.
