2013: Ch-ch-ch-ch-Changes

One of the benefits of blogging for me is that I can look back at old blog posts and see where my life was a week, month or year ago.   When I look at where I was at the end of 2012, I see that I am in a much different place now.   2012 was the year of the good, the bad and the ugly.  2013 was very different,  the year of many changes.

1. Aaron lost his job at the end of 2012 and in January of 2013 he got a new job.

2. I went from being a cancer patient to being cancer free!

3. I went back to teaching after spending three years home with the babies.

4. My kids grew a lot!  I know- they do that.  It just seems like such a difference from last year.

It was a really good year and our family has much to be grateful for.  I look forward to seeing what the Lord has planned for us in 2014!

What does a vacuum have to do with being selfish?

Our vacuum has gotten a real work out over the last five years!  When it comes to making a mess, we are hard core in this house.  So after five years our vacuum has been acting up.  It still worked but not as effectively as it did when we first purchased it.  I knew that a new one was in our near future but I planned to use it until it died.

One night last week after my husband got home from work, he ran out to the store to get some materials he needed for work.  When he walked in the door he had a new vacuum with him.

What was my response?
Gratitude
Joy
Appreciation
 Thankfulness
Excitement

No!  I thought to myself...
Why did he get a vacuum without asking me?

I wish that I had a chance to pick it out myself?

Aren't I the one that uses the vacuum 99.9% of the time?

Did we really need to be spending money on a new vacuum right now?

Fortunately I didn't act on those thoughts.  I had a chance to check myself and think it through before I spoke.  I realized how incredibly selfish I was acting.  I thought of the phrase, "first world problems."   I immediately changed my frame of mind to one that was more positive.  I thanked my husband and was grateful for the new vacuum.

I tried the vacuum out and was excited to see how much better it worked than the old vacuum. I focused on the fact that it was really thoughtful for my husband to surprise me with the new vacuum and to think of me while out shopping.  It was nice of him to buy something for me without me having to ask for it.

Boy was I being selfish!  I am glad that I was able to readjust my thinking before I spoke!

My Struggle With Envy

Our Home

The sin that I struggle the most with is Envy.   This past week I was struggling more than usual.  When I got divorced, I bought this two bedroom townhouse.  At the time, it was more than enough space for my daughter, Sydney and me.  Now five years later, there are five of us living here.  It is pretty tight!

Sydney's father  remarried and bought a new home.  It is a really large home with about five times the space that we have.  My old enemy, envy started to creep in.  I started to feel bad that I could not give Sydney her own room and all of the things that her father could.  It is so easy to start going down that road.

Sydney set me straight.  I asked her if she ever wished that she had a bigger house with us, like the one that she has with her dad.  She said, "Mom, the house doesn't matter.  I come here to be with my family, not the house."

How is it that a seven year old can see that so clearly but I can't?  Why do I struggle with envy?  Why is it so hard to be content? I need to remember what Sydney said and be content with what we have, to be happy that our family is here together.

"A heart at peace gives life to the body, but envy rots the bones."- Proverbs 14:30

Thriving on a Tight Budget- Holiday Decor

I love to decorate my house throughout the year.  Since my kids are a whopping 1/8 Irish, I feel obligated to decorate the house for St Patricks Day.  Decorating can be expensive.  I love the look of the picture above but I can't justify spending money on something that is only out for a few weeks out of the year.

How do you decorate for a holiday when you want to spend little or no money?

1. Use Your Child's Artwork

Sydney made this in Preschool

There are two benefits to using your child's artwork as decor.  First, it is a completely FREE way to decorate.  Second, it is so fun to look at the artwork through the years.  Sydney loves it when I pull out her old work.  She laughs at how she used to color.  She gets excited when she see that she is a much better writer now that she was just a year ago.

She wrote this last year in first grade

When the kids make something at school, it usually comes home after the holiday is already over.  The teacher takes the artwork  off of the bulletin board and sends it home with the kids.  It is too late to hang it up for this year.  Save all of your decor in one place so that you remember to hang it up next year.   I keep all of Sydney's in those useless drawers in my china cabinet.

2. Free Printables

You need to make Pinterest your best friend.  There are so many cute and FREE printables.  It will only cost you the ink and paper that it takes to print them.  If you decide to frame the printable for a more classy look, I suggest looking for inexpensive frames at garage sales, thrift shops or use a coupon for a craft store.

3. Make It Yourself

This is my last resort since it takes the most time and effort.  Some projects are inexpensive but watch your budgets because sometimes making it costs more than buying it.  I can't say it enough, start your love affair with pinterest!

Frugal Finds- A Dress Co op

Money is tight.  I think most families can relate to that especially with more tax money coming out of their paychecks this year.

I wrote in this previous post how I love to buy dresses for my little Ella.  I wrote about how I save tons of money by shopping at my favorite consignment shop.  Another way to add to those savings is to have a dress co-op.

My friend, Lindy, came up with the idea.  She and I were both pregnant at the same time.  We were actually due just a few days apart last spring.  Ella surprised us by arriving early so the girls ending up being a month apart.

With us both having girls so close in age and size, she suggested that we share the dresses that each bought- a dress co-op.  It has worked out really well so far.

Ella wearing the dress for Christmas

Today Emily wore a dress that my sister had hand smocked for Ella.  My sister made it roomy so that we could get some use out of it.  Since the girls both have the same first initial, my sister can even monogram a dress for my little E and Lindy's little E can use it too.

Emily wore the dress to church today.
When money is tight, you have to get creative!  Even if your financial situation is comfortable, why not save some cash by starting a dress co-op of your own?

Worthy of Admiration- Corrie ten Boom

My senior year in high school, we had to do a long spoken presentation on a person that we felt was an influential Christian.   Many people had chosen Billy Graham or other famous evangelists.   Others chose missionaries or people in the Bible.  I chose Corrie ten Boom.

Why choose Corrie?  I loved to read and I had just finished reading the Diary of Anne Frank, Night and The Hiding Place.  I wanted to learn more about the survivors.  During my years in high school why had I never heard of the Holocaust?  It was too important a piece of history to be left out of our curriculum.  I was going to change that for my class.  I chose Corrie so that I could use her story to share that part of history with my classmates that did not know what had happened.

Corrie ten Boom and her family were Christians living in Amsterdam  in 1942 during World War II and Hitler's invasion of the Netherlands. During this time, the Nazis were arresting and detaining Jewish people in concentration camps, otherwise know as death camps.

Corrie and her family were Christians so they would not have been bothered by the Nazis as they swept through Holland looking for Jews.  But the ten Boom family harbored Jewish refugees in their home in a "hiding place"
In 1944 an informant told the Nazis that the ten Booms had been helping Jews to evade detection from the Nazis.  The ten Booms were all arrested but the six Jews that were in the "hiding place" evaded detection and survived.

Corrie and her family were sent to concentration camps throughout Europe.  During this time Corrie's father and sister, Betsie were killed.

In the book, "The Hiding Place," Corrie details the terribel ordeal that she experienced at Ravensbruck concentration camp.  Throughout this horrific experience, Corrie remained positive and encouraged and witnessed to many of her fellow prisoners.  She wrote many of these famous quotes during her time suffering in the concentration camp.

No matter how bad the conditions were in the concentration camp, Corrie remained positive and trusted the Lord completely.

She stood in the face of torture and death on a daily basis and she was not afraid.  She would encourage other prisoners with her quotes.

Corrie was eventually released from Ravensbruck in December of 1944.  She found out later that her release was due to a clerical error.  She was really supposed to be on the list to be killed the next week with the other prisoners her age. Her release was a mistake.  God uses mistakes!  This mistake saved Corrie's life!

After her release, Corrie went on to travel the world to speak about the Holocaust and her survival.  Another strong theme in her speeches was forgiveness.   She had even forgiven the guards from Ravensbruck concentration camp that killed her father and sister.  Many people became Christians after listening to Corrie speak.

Corrie was a prolific writer and I encourage you to read her books.  She is inspirational!!!! When you feel like life is too difficult and you disappointed in God, think of Corrie.  She went through worse than any of us have and through it all she trusted and praised our Lord!

Contentment

It is my goal in 2013 to be content with what we have.    It is so easy to start feeling sorry myself.  I can get stuck in the "woe is me" mindset.

When I look at social media, I see "friends" that have much more than I do.  They talk about buying bigger houses and getting new cars.  They have the financial means to "spoil" their children.  Their kids have their own rooms. They have good jobs and medical benefits.   They don't think twice about going out to dinner or to the movies.  Their kids have extravagant birthday parties and tons of gifts.  They go on long vacations and "shop till they drop."  They seem to "have it all."

I need to take a deep breath and remember that coveting is a barrier to contentment.  It is one of the ten commandments:

"You shall not covet your neighbor's house. You shall not covet your
neighbor's wife, or his manservant or maidservant, his ox or donkey,
or anything that belongs to your neighbor." Exodus 20:17 NIV

I also need to remember that on social media, we rarely see a person's real life.  They may act like their life is perfect but in reality are struggling behind closed doors.

I need to be thankful for what I do have instead of focusing on what I don't have.  That list will appear in an upcoming blog post.
